Stonehill Tops Bentley 6-2 in Non-Conference Tilt

WALTHAM, Mass. – A two-run homerun by sophomore second baseman Dan Fratus in the second inning put Stonehill College ahead for good, as the Skyhawks defeated Bentley University 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball at DeFelice Field.

Bentley dented the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first on an RBI single to left by grad student Bryant Johnson (Hopedale, Mass./Milford) that drove in sophomore center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) from third.

But Stonehill went ahead in the second. After a leadoff walk to DH Steven Popp, Fratus crushed the first pitch he saw from starter Blaine McLean (Medford, Mass./Cushing Academy) and sent it deep over the left field fence to give them a 2-1 lead.

The Skyhawks scored once in the fourth to go up 3-1, and tacked on two more in the sixth inning. Senior first baseman Michael White led off with a walk, and after freshman pitcher Ryan O'Connor (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) struck out Popp, Fratus doubled to left. With two on, sophomore right fielder Billy Karalis tripled to left to bring home White and Fratus.

Bentley got to within 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth when senior catcher Greg Baggett (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) scored from third on a wild pitch. But that was the last run of the game for the Falcons.

Senior pitcher Kyle Shepard got the win for Stonehill. He went five innings and allowed two runs on three hits to improve to 2-0 on the year.

The Skyhawks are now 12-6 on the season, while Bentley's three game winning streak came to an end with the Falcons dropping to 8-11. They'll hit the field again on Friday afternoon at Adelphi.
