Mager Drives in 3 as Rollins Tops Bentley, 7-2

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Junior second baseman Kevin Mager (Middletown, N.J.) drove in three runs, including two during a five-run fourth inning, as Rollins College topped Bentley University, 7-2, in non-conference college baseball Friday night at Alfond Stadium.

After three scoreless innings, Bentley (0-5) got on the scoreboard first with a single run in the top of the fourth. Grad student and right fielder Bryant Johnson (Hopedale, Mass./Milford HS) led off with an infield single, advanced to second on a ground out and came home when sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) singled to left.

The lead didn't last long as the Tars (5-3) came back with five runs in the bottom of the same inning, with two Falcon errors making three of the runs unearned. Senior first baseman Brian Lattanzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) began the big inning with a one-out double and he later scored the tying run on a bases-loaded walk. The go-ahead run scored on an error, and Mager followed with his two-run single.

Both teams picked up a run in the seventh, and Rollins completed the game's scoring with another single run in the eight. Bentley's run came when senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./ Daniel Hand HS) hit a lead-off double to right, moved up 90 feet on a ground out and scored on another ground-ball out.

Rollins outhit the Falcons 7-5, with Mager (2-for-4) the only player in the game to have more than one.

Junior righty Taylor Smith (Chatanooga, Tenn.) earned the win for Rollins with eight innings of five-hit, five-strikeout pitching. John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic HS) took the loss for the Falcons after yielding five hits and two earned runs in five innings of work.

The four-game series continues Saturday at 1 pm.
