Brekke, Larkins & Carter Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

WALTHAM, Mass. – Former Bentley University student-athletes Kari Brekke (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS), Ana Carter (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and Nate Larkins (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn HS) have been named 2023 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse Magazine.

Since 1992, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar awards have been presented to undergraduate students of color who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field.

All three were recognized for the second straight year. Larkins was a first-team honoree for football, Brekke was a first-teamer for women's basketball, and Carter was one of seven field hockey players nationally to receive the honor,

Larkins, following the 2022 season, was selected first-team Academic All-Northeast-10 and College Sports Communicators Academic All-Super Region 1. Last fall, the management major rushed for 579 yards and seven touchdowns, had 80 receiving yards and finished his Bentley career with 1,370 rushing yards with a 5.1 per carry average, 16 touchdowns and only one fumble on 270 carries.

Brekke twice earned third-team All-Northeast-10 honors as a Falcon and averaged 7.9 points in 28 games this past season for the Northeast-10 champion Falcons. A grad student who was working on her MBA, she played three seasons for Bentley after beginning her college career at New Hampshire and scored more than 1,100 points as a collegian.

Carter, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics-finance, started 17 games for Bentley last fall on defense and helped the Falcons to an 11-8 record. She was credited with four defensive saves in her first season as a starter.
