Saint Anselm Takes Two from Bentley, 2-1 & 8-0; 4-Hit Day for McQuaid

MANCHESTER, N.H.  – Despite four hits in six at bats from sophomore designated hitter Stephanie McQuaid (Windham, N.H./Austin Prep HS), the Bentley University Falcons were swept by Saint Anselm College, 2-1 and 8-0, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Saturday afternoon at South Athletic Field.

In the opener, the Hawks picked up single runs in the second and third innings.  Freshman shortstop Jordan O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) had an RBI double in the second and a bases-loaded passed ball in the third allowed senior left fielder Pattie Turner (Warwick, R.I) to score what proved to be the decisive run.

Bentley's only run of the day scored in the fourth when junior center fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney HS) led off with a double to center and scored on a McQuaid single to right.

The Falcons had two on with two out in the seventh before freshman Arika Brochu (Augusta, Maine) completed three scoreless innings of relief by getting a game-ending foul pop-up. Brochu saved the game for junior Sam Hennequin (Auburn, N.H.), who allowed five hits in four innings.

Junior Kelsey Smith (Jaffrey, N.H./Conant HS) pitched well in relief for the Falcons, scattering five hits and striking out five in four scoreless innings. McQuaid was the only Bentley player with multiple hits as she had three of her team's seven.

Game two ended in the bottom of the sixth when Turner finished a four-run inning with a two-run homer to left, her seventh of the season. She was one of six Hawks to have two hits in the game as Saint Anselm (11-22, 6-10 Northeast) outhit the visitors 13-6.

Brochu pitched the first 5.2 innings of the shutout, yielding six hits and three walks while striking out one. Bentley left nine runners on base and was just one for eight with runners in scoring position.

Junior left fielder Kelsey Kennedy (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) had two hits for the Falcons and finished the twinbill three for six.

The double loss dropped Bentley to 12-17 overall and 8-7 Northeast. The Falcons will play their tenth game in six days Sunday at 2:30 pm at Stonehill College.
