Strong Finish Lifts Bentley to 3-1 Win over Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Led by sophomore second baseman Catie Noons (North Dighton/Dighton-Rehoboth HS), the Bentley University Falcons scored single runs in each of the final three innings to post a 3-1 win over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division softball Friday afternoon at South Athletic Field.

Down 1-0 after four, Bentley tied the game with a two-out rally in the fifth. Junior third baseman Katelyn Lebreux (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford HS) singled to center, senior catcher Jill Raia (Montville, N.J./Morristown-Beard School) followed with a single to left, and Lebreux scored on Noons' single to right.

Senior shortstop Alex Borrelli (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic HS) opened the sixth by making it to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Junior center fielder Chelsea Vena (Matawan, N.J./ Saint John Vianney HS) sacrificed her to third and a ground ball to second got Borrelli home with the go-ahead run.

Bentley tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. Lebreux went all the way from home to third on a throwing error and scored on a one-out double to left by Noons, her third hit of the afternoon.

The only run allowed by winning pitcher Kelly Ferris (Seymour, Conn./Seymour HS) came in the first inning on a lead-off single, a sacrifice and a double by sophomore catcher  Megan Murrell (Scarborough, Maine).

The senior lefty, now 8-8 on the season, allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out two in her 13th complete game of the season.

Bentley remained in third place in the NE-10's Northeast Division while improving to 12-15 overall and 8-5 division. Saint Anselm dropped to 9-22 overall and 4-10 Northeast.

The two teams will continue the series Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Saint Anselm.
