Bio
Sandy Hoffman, a 2014 selection for the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, served as Bentley's head volleyball coach from 1982-2013. She took a medical leave of absence in August 2014 and lost a long battle with cancer on August 31, 2015.
Hoffman amassed 758 career victories, seventh most all-time in Division II women's volleyball history, with her record standing at 758-366. She was inducted into the Bentley Athletic Hall of Fame in September 2015 and the Northeast-10 Conference Hall of Fame in June 2016.
The 2013 season saw Hoffman earn her 750th career win Sept. 29 with a 3-1 victory over St. Michael’s and earn Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honors, an award that now carries her name, for the eighth time. The Falcons finished 17-10 overall and tied for second place in the NE-10, improvements of seven-and-a-half games and eight places over 2012.
Career win number 700 came Nov. 13, 2009 against Le Moyne in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 playoffs. She reached the 500-win milestone during the 2001 season, becoming only the second New England coach to reach the plateau, and notched career win number 600 Oct. 22, 2005 against Saint Rose.
Under Hoffman’s tutelage, the Bentley program consistently ranked amongst the Northeast-10 elite. Her team won the regular season conference title outright nine times (1986-90, 1996, 2001-02 and 2005) and was co-champs in 1992 and 1995. In addition, under her guidance, Bentley captured the Northeast-10 playoff championship nine times and was in the NCAA Division II tournament 11 times (1993, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2002 and annually from 2004-09). In November 2005, Bentley reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in the program's history. Northeast-10 Coach of the Year awards came annually from 1985-89 as well as in 2001, 2005 and 2013.
Only five times did a Hoffman-coached team fail to finish in the top three of the Northeast-10, and there were 28 winning records in her last 31 seasons.
Hoffman was a Bentley assistant athletics director for a quarter-century, from 1990-2014. During that time, her responsibilities involved her in virtually every aspect of the athletic department’s operations.
Initially, she was responsible for physical education, recreation, compliance and student services, including the academic tutoring of athletes. At other times, her duties included facility and intercollegiate scheduling, and monitoring financial aid.
After a realignment of the athletic department in 2000, Hoffman was responsible for the fiscal affairs of the Bentley athletic program until stepping aside for health reasons.
Prior to being named an assistant athletic director, Hoffman served as Recreation Director and the athletic department’s Coordinator of Academic Support Services.
Hoffman's achievements included serving on the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee.
