Rally from 2-0 Down Over New Haven Caps Volleyball’s Perfect First Day of Hoffman Tournament

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley rallied from two sets down against New Haven for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap of the Sandy Hoffman Memorial Tournament on Friday night. Earlier in the day, the Falcons swept American International 3-0.

 

Bentley 3, New Haven 2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 26-24, 15-4)

Bentley dugs themselves out of a 2-0 hole to rally to defeat NE10 rival New Haven in their second game on Friday night. In a non-conference match, the Chargers raced out to a two sets to zero lead after they won the opening sets 25-21, 25-23.

Early in the 3rd set Bentley led 6-2 and an 8-4 run to extended their lead to 14-6. The closest New Haven got was 16-10, before the Falcons put them away with a 9-7 to close out the game. Ingrid Murphy and Ellie Wheeler each had four kills in the 3rd game.

The Falcons led the 4th game 16-12 before New Haven crawled back into it to tie the score at 20-20. The teams proceeded to trade points before an ace by Jazzy Burke sealed a 26-24 win and forced a 5th game.

The Falcons dominated the 5th game 15-4 to complete the rally. They jumped out to a 5-1 lead, extended it to 10-3 and closed the match with a kill by freshman Sasha Luzina.

Senior setter Natalie Thom had 24 assists and freshman Elliet Manning notched 23. Murphy had a match high 16 kills.

 

Bentley 3, AIC 0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21)

In a meeting of the NE10 co-regular season champions from last season, the Falcons swept the Yellow Jackets to begin the day.

Murphy led the way with 12 kills and Rachel Vitko notched eight. Thom and freshman Lauren Hallas each accounted for 13 assists.

Bentley closed the first game strong. Leading 20-19, they scored five of the final seven points to win it 25-21.

The Falcons never trailed in the second game and led by as much as 10-3 in the early going. The Yellow Jackets pulled to within 17-15, but another strong closing run by the Falcons of 8-4 gave them the game.

Bentley then closed out the match 25-21 in the third game, with a kill by Vitko the closing point.
