In Battle for NE10 Lead, AIC Takes Down Bentley

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Entering Tuesday night's match at the Butova Gymnasium, the Bentley University women's volleyball team had won eight in a row and American International College was 14-0 since falling at Bentley in an early season non-conference match. Both were unbeaten in Northeast-10 Conference play.

By the time the match ended, AIC was the alone on top of the conference standings and Bentley's winning streak was history.

With the Falcons committing nine service errors, six receiving errors and four ball handling errors, the Yellow Jackets swept in three sets, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-21.

AIC closed the first with an 8-4 spurt after the two teams were even at 17-17. Set two saw the Yellow Jackets vault out to a 10-3 lead and remain in control throughout.

Bentley also got off to a slow start in the third, but came back to take a 20-18 lead. The Jackets ran off the next six points and closed out the sweep with a kill by Mai-Lani Hernandez (Miami, Fla.).

Bentley, which hit only .121 in the final two sets, received nine kills and a .287 hitting percentage from junior Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kan./Olathe HS) and eight from senior Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit/Barnstable HS). Grad student Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS) had 20 assists and Murphy made 11 digs.

For AIC (17-1, 5-0 NE10), Paolo Soto-Burgos (Coamo, P.R.) led the way with nine kills and Naomi Eckert Rivera (Toa Baja, P.R.) was credited with 31 assists.

Bentley (16-5, 5-1 NE10) will return home to host Assumption University Thursday at 7 pm.
