Murphy & Wheeler Power Bentley to 7th Straight Win, 3-0 vs. Bridgeport

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit/Barnstable HS) had 14 kills, junior Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kans./Saint James Academy) added 11 and both hit .385 as Bentley University downed the University of Bridgeport in three sets Monday evening in the Dana Center. The scores of the Falcons' seventh straight win were 25-22, 25-19 and 25-13.

Bentley, 15-4, remained unbeaten at home (9-0) and extended its streak of consecutive sets won to 16. The Falcons also improved to 12-1 against NCAA Division II East Region opposition.

In the first, the Falcons scored the final five points to take a tightly contested set. Grad student Katie Rounds (McFarland, Wis./McFarland HS) and junior Caitlin Wunder (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) each had kills and junior Angie Grabmeier (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) had an ace during the closing burst.

It was another strong finish in the second after the Purple Knights (5-14) took a 15-14 lead. A kill by Wheeler ignited an 11-5 Falcon run that included three Murphy kills and ended on a block by freshman Elizabeth Blinn (Concord, N.H./Concord HS).

After a slow start to the third, the Falcons finished the match by earning 23 of the match's final 30 points. The third set included four kills in six swings by Murphy and two aces by sophomore Jazzy Burke (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George Central HS).

Murphy, named the NE10 Player of the Week earlier in the day, completed her sixth double-double with 12 digs. Wunder added five kills and three blocks, and graduate student Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS) had a team-best 16 assists.

For Bridgeport, Paola Hernandez (Bayamon, P.R.) had 12 kills without an error and a .387 hitting percentage

Bentley hit .333, limited the visitors to a .167 hitting percentage and finished with a 10-3 advantage in service aces, including three by Burke.

The Falcons will conclude a five-match homestand on Wednesday against Mercy College.
