Bentley Downs Ohio Dominican Before Falling to Ashland

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Junior Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kans./Saint James Academy) had 13 kills and sophomore Rachel Vitko (Dover, N.H./Dover HS) added a dozen as the Bentley University women's volleyball team defeated Ohio Dominican University, 3-1, during the UIndy Invitational Saturday at Nicoson Hall. The scores were 25-19, 24-26, 25-17, 25-17.

In the Falcons' second match of the day, Bentley dropped a 3-2 decision to Ashland University. After trailing 2-1, the Eagles came from behind by taking the fourth set, 25-15, and the fifth, 15-10.

Against the ODU Panthers, 11 service aces and nine blocks helped Bentley gain the victory. Junior Ali Steussi (Fairhaven, Mass./Fairhaven HS) served four aces and grad student Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS) was credited with five blocks.

Vitko did most of her work in the pivotal third set, making seven kills and hitting .545 in 11 swings.

Wheeler powered the offense in the fourth set, putting down five kills with a .400 hitting percentage.

Vitko and senior Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit, Mass./Barnstable HS) each had 15 kills for the Falcons against Ashland. Murphy hit .318 and Vitko swung at a .364 success rate. Senior Jolie Schmidt (Louisville, Ky./Ardrey Hall (N.C.) HS) also contributed for Bentley with five blocks.

Ashland (4-5) featured Erin Krupar (East Sparta, Ohio), who amassed 21 kills, a .390 hitting percentage, 17 digs and four blocks. In the fourth set, she had eight kills in ten swings, singlehandedly recording more kills than the Falcons (7).

In the fifth set, Ashland closed with a 4-1 spurt to capture the match.

Bentley, 5-3 overall, completed the tournament with a 1-3 record.

Next weekend, Bentley will compete in the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Division II East Region Clash with matches against Molloy, Saint Anselm, Bridgeport and Daemen.
