Bentley Wins at New Haven to Secure Home Playoff Match

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kans./Saint James Academy), the conference leader in kills per set, totaled 17 kills and ten digs while helping Bentley University to a 3-1 win over first-place University of New Haven in Northeast-10 women's volleyball Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. The scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-18 and 25-20.

With the victory in the regular season finale, Bentley not only moved into a three-way tie for fourth place but secured the number four seed and a quarterfinal home match in next week's conference championships.

Five of Wheeler's kills came in the opening set. It was tied at 23 before consecutive attack errors by New Haven gave Bentley the 1-0 lead.

A 9-2 closing run provided the Falcons with the win in the pivotal third set. Bentley had eight kills during that stretch, including two apiece from junior Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit, Mass./Barnstable HS), senior Shannon Ngo (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda HS) and sophomore Caitlin Wunder (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy). After going up 24-18, set point came on an ace from sophomore Angie Grabmeier (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS).

Bentley closed out the fourth with an 8-3 spurt with match point coming on a shared block by Wunder and Ngo.

Murphy and Ngo also amassed double-figure kills for Bentley, with 14 and ten, respectively. Murphy also had four aces and 19 digs, and Ngo made four blocks.

Freshman Jazzy Burke (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George Central HS) recorded 23 digs and senior setter Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS) finished with 32 assists and 19 digs.

New Haven (20-8, 10-3 NE10) received double-doubles from senior Jessica Akiona (Kapolei, Hawaii), freshman Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich.) and junior Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y.).

Bentley, the defending conference championship, will carry records of 14-11 overall and 9-4 NE10 into the postseason. The Falcons will host number five Southern Connecticut Tuesday at 7 pm.
