Murphy Leads Way as Bentley Serves Past Assumption, 3-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit/Barnstable HS) put down 11 kills, made 20 digs and served a career-high six aces as Bentley University swept visiting Assumption University in non-conference women's volleyball Tuesday night at the Dana Center. The scores were 26-24, 25-14 and 25-22.

Bentley, with its sixth win in its last seven matches, improved to 10-7 overall and 9-3 against East Region opponents. Assumption dropped back to .500 at 6-6 after its second loss in eight days to the Falcons.

Serving played a key role in the match with the Falcons finishing with a season-best 13 aces and a half-dozen service aces. On the other hand, Assumption had five aces and 11 service errors. That's a swing of 13 points in a match in which Bentley outscored the Greyhounds by 16.

After trailing the opening set by as many as five points early, Bentley scored the final two points, on a kill by sophomore Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kans./Saint James Academy), this week's Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week, and an ace from senior setter Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS). The first set included four kills from sophomore Caitlin Wunder (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) and three aces served by sophomore Angie Grabmeier (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS).

Six kills by Wheeler and aces on three consecutive serves from Murphy helped Bentley dominate the second set. Murphy also had kills for the final three points, finishing a 15-5 run.

Wheeler's 13th kill of the evening, and sixth in nine swings during the third set, accounted for match point with Parker picking up her 35th assist.

Bentley also received 17 digs from freshman Jazzy Burke (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George HS) and three blocks from Murphy.

The Falcons will continue their season-long four-match homestand this weekend against Saint Rose on Friday and Le Moyne on Saturday.
