Franklin Pierce Upends Defending Champion Falcons, 3-1

RINDGE, N.H. – Bentley University's modest three-match winning streak ended Tuesday evening when the reigning Northeast-10 Conference champion Falcons fell in four sets to Franklin Pierce University at The Fieldhouse. The scorers were 25-17, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-22.

The Falcons, who hit only .096 in the match, dropped to 7-7 overall and 3-1 NE10 while Franklin Pierce improved to 8-5 with its second win in three conference matches.

After dropping the opener and falling behind in the second, Bentley used a 21-10 run to square the match at one set apiece. It included eight straight points by the Falcons, a spurt that included two kills by junior outside hitter Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit, Mass./Barnstable HS) and two blocks from senior setter Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS).

Bentley led the third 23-22, but the Ravens captured the pivotal third set by earning the final three points on a Falcon attack error, a Raven ace and a kill from junior Ingrid Lindstrom (Dudley, Mass.).

An 8-2 FPU spurt gave the home team a 21-15 lead in the fourth. Bentley pulled within two at 24-22 before Lindstrom put down a kill for match point.

Lindstrom paced Franklin Pierce with 13 kills and four blocks. Junior Mariah Robles (West Covina, Calif.) was involved in six of her team's eight blocks and sophomore Morgan Schmutzler (Lockport, Ill.) contributed 28 digs and three aces.

Murphy had a double-double for Bentley, finishing with 11 kills, 21 digs and two blocks. Classmate Katie Rounds (McFarland, Wis./McFarland HS) followed with ten kills and Parker finished with 38 assists, 18 digs, four blocks and two aces.

Bentley's next match is next Tuesday at Assumption University.
