Bentley Sweeps Saint Anselm in Home Opener; 17 Kills for Wheeler

WALTHAM, Mass. – Playing in the Dana Center for the first time since capturing the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in November 2019, the Bentley University women's volleyball swept Saint Anselm College in the first meeting between the two squads since the 2019 NE10 semifinals Tuesday evening. The scores were 26-24, 25-19 and 25-23.

Bentley, 6-6 overall and 2-0 NE10 after winning for the fifth time in six matches, was led by the trio of sophomore Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kans./Saint James Acad.), senior setter Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS) and freshman libero Jazzy Burke (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George Central HS).

Wheeler put down 17 kills with at least five in each set, Parker delivered 40 assists and Burke had 24 digs.

Each of the first two sets saw the Falcons come from behind. They trailed early in the first, 9-3, and were down 21-18 before closing with an 8-3 spurt, including set point from Wheeler. That followed a kill from junior Katie Rounds (McFarland, Wis./McFarland HS) that broke a 24-all deadlock.

Bentley finished the second set with an impressive 17-6 run after trailing 13-8. Wheeler and Rounds once again finished the set with kills, only in the opposite order of the first.

The Falcons never trailed in the third set and had a 22-16 lead before Saint Anselm (9-4, 0-1 NE10) staged a late rally. They drew within one twice before senior Shannon Ngo (San Rafael, Calif./ Terra Linda HS) put down her fifth kill for match point.

Rounds had a strong hitting night, swinging at a .636 success rate with eight kills. Freshman Rachel Vitko (Dover, N.H./Dover HS) added nine kills for the Falcons, who finished with 17 more than the visitors (47-30).

Bentley hit a sparkling .455 in the second set and finished at .264 overall.

The Falcons, who had been away from Waltham for their first 11 matches, return to the road for a Saturday matinee at St. Michael's.
