Murphy, Wheeler Lead Bentley Past SNHU in NE10 Opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Junior Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit, Mass./Barnstable HS) and sophomore Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kans./Saint James Academy) each recorded double-figure kills as Bentley University opened its Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball schedule with a three-set sweep of Southern New Hampshire University Saturday afternoon at the Stan Spirou Field House. The scores were 25-20, 26-24 and 25-23.

Coach Joey Pacis' team finished each set in strong fashion, coming from behind in each with a 12-4 burst in the opener, 5-1 in the second and the same in the third. SNHU led the first 16-13, the second 21-19 and the third 22-20.

During the closing run in the opening set, both Wheeler and senior Shannon Ngo (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda HS) each had three kills. Freshman Rachel Vitko (Dover, N.H./Dover HS) closed out the second with a kill and the third ended with a Penmen attack error.

Wheeler filled the stat sheet with 13 kills, 18 digs and four blocks while also hitting a solid .387. Murphy also had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs.

Senior setter Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS) had 30 assists for the Falcons, as well as a dozen digs, and junior Katie Rounds (McFarland, Wisc./McFarland HS) established a new career best with eight blocks.

Serving favored the home team has SNHU had a 7-2 advantage in aces and only three service errors, as compared to the Falcons' eight. Blocks, on the other hand, were all Bentley. The Falcons sent back the ball ten times and the Penmen (5-5, 0-1 NE10) didn't have a single rejection.

Bentley also outhit the Penmen, .264-.072.

After 11 matches away from Waltham to start the season, the Falcons will host Saint Anselm Tuesday night in the home opener. First serve is at 7 pm.
