Murphy, Wheeler Lead Bentley Past New Haven, 3-1

WATERBURY, Conn. – After dropping the opening set 25-22, the Bentley University women's volleyball team claimed the next three to earn a 3-1 victory over the University of New Haven Friday in the Post Eagle Invitational Tournament at the Drubner Center. The scores of the final three were 25-18, 25-22 and 25-23.

Leading the Falcons were junior captain Ingrid Murphy (Cotuit, Mass./Barnstable HS) and sophomore Ellie Wheeler (Olathe, Kans./Saint James Acad.), with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Both also posted a double-double with Wheeler making 17 digs, three more than O'Brien.

Senior setter and co-captain Amanda Parker (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North HS) also played a key role as Bentley posted its first victory of the new season. She finished with 41 assists, three blocks and two aces.

Senior Shannon Ngo (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda HS) joined Murphy and Wheeler on the list of Falcons with double-figure kills. She hit .333 with 11 kills and three blocks.

In the clinching final set, after the Chargers (2-4) forged a 23-all tie, Bentley locked up the victory with consecutive kills from Murphy and Ngo. Other than the opening point, the Falcons never trailed and were up by as many as nine, 15-9.

The third set was also close late before Bentley received the last two points by virtue of two Charger attack errors.

In the second, Bentley closed with a 6-1 run that began with a Wheeler kill.

New Haven was led by freshman outside hitter Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich.), with 15 kills and the same number of digs.

The tournament continues Saturday with Bentley facing Post at 11 am and Holy Family at 3 pm. A webcast and live stats will be available for each match.
