Bentley Set to Take on Stonehill in NE-10 Semis

Championship Website

WALTHAM, Mass. – After winning four of its last five matches, including a 3-2 quarterfinal victory over Merrimack College Tuesday night, the Bentley University Falcons will take on second-seeded Stonehill College Friday night at the University of New Haven's Charger Gymnasium in the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Volleyball Championships.

The match is scheduled for 7:30 pm, following the 5 pm match between top-seeded New Haven and fourth-seeded Adelphi University, and will be webcast free of charge at www.northeast10.tv. Live stats will also be available at www.bentleyfalcons.com.

Friday's winners will meet Saturday at 5 pm in the conference championship. Bentley will be looking to reach the finals and claim its first tournament championship since 2006. All told, the Falcons have been in the finals 15 times with eight titles.

Bentley, New Haven and Stonehill finished in a three-way tie for first during the regular season and Adelphi could have made it four if it could have posted a win at Merrimack last Saturday night.

Bentley, 17-10 overall and ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II East Region, used 14 kills from senior Tatiana Froehlich (Newton/Newton North HS), the eighth double-double season from junior Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS), a career-best eight blocks from senior Simone Silvera (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) and 42 assists and three aces from senior Alex Tator (Los Angeles, Calif./Marlborough School) to advance past Merrimack.

Coach Joey Pacis' team, up 2-1 after three, bounced back from a fourth-set loss to dispose of the vistors 15-7 in the fifth. The win was the Falcons' fifth in seven five-set matches this season.

Bentley had four players recognized with All-Conference honors earlier in the week, and also saw Pacis recognized with the Sandy Hoffman Coach of the Year award. Buscher and Tator were voted to the All-NE-10 second team, senior Savannah Dominguez (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity HS) received third-team recognition and sophomore Lauren Van Buren (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa HS) was selected for the All-Rookie Team.

Stonehill needed four closely contested sets to dispose of seventh-seeded Southern New Hampshire and earn its eighth appearance in the semifinals. The Skyhawks, 21-6 overall and number three in the region, will be looking to advance past the semis for the first time ever.

Stonehill is led by senior Emily Iverson, who was named both the Player and Setter of the Year in the Northeast-10, and two-time first-team All-Conference honoree Delia Phillips. Phillips excelled in the quarters with 22 kills, 17 digs and a .300 hitting percentage.

Bentley and Stonehill met once during the season with the Skyhawks prevailing in four at the Dana Center. The road team has won the last three meetings, including a 3-2 Stonehill victory in the 2013 NE-10 tournament that ended the season for the Falcons a year ago.

The field for the 2014 NCAA Division II Championships will be announced Sunday night at 10 pm on www.NCAA.com. Bentley, 17-5 in regional matches, is seeking its first NCAA berth since 2009.
