Bentley Prevails in Five to Snap New Haven’s 94-Match NE-10 Winning Streak

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – With three players achieving career-best performances, the Bentley University women's volleyball team outlasted the University of New Haven in five sets Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium to end the Chargers' 94-match winning streak in Northeast-10 Conference regular season play.

Bentley, which faced a 14-12 deficit in the decisive set, picked up the match's final four points to complete the 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 16-14 victory and hand New Haven, which joined the conference in 2008, its first-ever NE-10 regular season loss. It also snapped the Chargers' 14-match winning streak this fall.

Junior Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS) provided a career-high 22 kills and 18 digs, senior setter Alex Tator (Los Angeles, Calif./Marlborough School) set a career-best with 57 assists and also had 18 digs, and senior libero Lauren Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) matched her high with 33 digs.

"This was an absolutely incredible win for this team, especially the senior class," said Bentley acting head coach Joey Pacis. "After playing well and winning the first two sets, solid play by New Haven shifted the momentum in their favor, ultimately leading to a final set.

"Down 14-12 in the fifth, we showed determination and resiliency to narrowly pull out the W," continued Pacis. "Beating the Chargers is a big moment for the Bentley volleyball program."

In the fifth, kills by Buscher and seniors Tatiana Froelich (Newton, Mass./Newton North HS) and Kaleigh Sullivan (Naples, Fla./Harley School, N.Y.) helped Bentley jump out to a 4-0 lead. New Haven countered with five straight and the teams would not be separated by more than one point until a Falcon attack error put the home team up 14-12 and a point away from a 95th consecutive win.

However, a kill from senior Savannah Dominguez (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity HS) and a Charger attack error squared the set at 14-all. Buscher's 22nd kill put the Falcons back in front and senior Simone Silvera (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) ended matters with her ninth kill.

After taking the first two sets, Bentley looked like it might take care of business earlier than the fifth. There were leads of 8-2 and 13-6 in the third and 21-19 in the fourth before New Haven rallied.

Following Buscher in the kill department were Dominguez and Froehlich, with 15 and 11, respectively. Dominguez had a strong hitting game, as did Silvera, with Dominguez finishing at .393 and Silvera .348. Dominguez also had a team-best four blocks.

Bentley, which has won a season-best six in a row, served 13 aces, including four by freshman Shannon Kelly (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt HS) and three by Tator.

The Falcons' 117 digs was its highest count in a dozen years. Five players reached doubles in that category, including junior Jessica Segal (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison HS) with 19 and Kelly with 15.

Senior Margo Meteyer (Madison, Wisc.) led New Haven with 15 kills, 23 digs and three aces. Junior Kea-Marie Olaso (Kailua, Hawai'i) finished with 32 digs and senior Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i) provided eight kills, 39 assists and 22 digs.

The victory boosted the Falcons to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in the NE-10 while New Haven dipped to 14-5 overall and 6-1 conference.

Bentley's six-match road trip will continue Tuesday at Assumption College (7 pm).
