AIC Picks Up Final 6 Points to Take Down Bentley in Five

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Three consecutive kills by six-foot one senior Blair Havron (Pukalani, Hawaii) capped a match-ending 6-0 run and lifted American International College to a 3-2 upset victory over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium.

Havron finished with 19 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, with five of those kills coming in the decisive fifth set. After a kill by Bentley sophomore Jaci Buscher (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain HS) evened the fifth-set score at 9-9, the Yellow Jackets regained the advantage on back-to-back attack errors by the Falcons.

The third ace of the day from junior Vanessa Ruiz (West Springfield) extended the AIC lead to 12-9 and Havron locked up the match with her 17th, 18th and 19th kills of the afternoon.

Bentley, which suffered only its second conference loss, took the first and third sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-16. AIC claimed the even-numbered ones, 25-14 in the second and 25-22 in the fourth.

Buscher led the Falcons with 11 kills and Bentley also received seven apiece from juniors Savannah Dominguez (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity HS) and Kaleigh Sullivan (Naples, Fla./Harley School, N.Y.). The Falcons hit just .103 in the match, their third-lowest mark of the season. AIC wasn't much better, finishing at .126, but had a 9-5 edge in aces.

Junior setter Alex Tator (Los Angeles, Calif./Marlborough School)  gave Bentley 31 assists and recorded career bests in kills (6, in 11 swings) and digs (18). The Falcons also received three aces from junior Tatiana Froehlich (Newton/Newton North HS) and 19 digs from classmate Lauren Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville HS).

For AIC (12-13, 6-4 NE-10), senior Caitlin Connelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) had 26 digs, freshman Hannah Smith (Reno, Nev.) provided 45 assists and sophomore Britt Bryant (New Windsor, N.Y.) made 12 kills.

The loss dropped Bentley into a tie for third in the NE-10 at 7-2 conference and 13-8 overall. The Falcons will look to get back on track Tuesday night at Saint Anselm.
