AIC Comes From Behind to Stun Bentley in Five; Strong Effort for Buckner in Defeat

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Down 2-0 in the match and trailing late in the third, American International College came storming back to register a 3-2 victory over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball Friday night at Butova Gymnasium.

The Falcons seemed firmly in charge of the match after taking the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-20, and opening up an 18-11 advantage in the third.  However, AIC had other ideas and began a 14-5 set-ending run with consecutive kills by senior setter Elisha Terry (Fort Worth, Texas).

The Yellow Jackets eventually tied the set at 22-all and jumped in front, 23-22, on a Falcon attack error. Following a Bentley point to make it 23-23, the Jackets pulled out the set on kills by freshman Vanessa Ruiz (West Springfield) and sophomore Blair Havron (Pukalani, Hawaii).

AIC (14-13, 8-4 NE-10) had little problem in the fourth, taking it 25-16 to even the match, and took the finale 15-11 after the two squads were even at 8-8. A kill by freshman Phoebe Lettington (Irvine, Calif.) broke the tie and launched a match-ending 7-3 spurt.

Bentley freshman Kelsey Buckner (San Marino, Calif./San Marino HS) had an impressive match, hitting .481 with 13 kills and no errors in 27 swings. She also filled the stat sheet with 16 digs, two aces and two blocks.

The Falcons (11-14, 6-7 NE-10) also received 37 assists, five kills and two blocks from freshman setter Alex Tator (Los Angeles, Calif./Marlborough School), 19 digs and four aces from freshman libero Lauren Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) and 11 kills and three blocks from junior Grace Conner (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS).

Ruiz hit .481 to pace the AIC offense, and finished with 14 kills and eight digs. Terry recorded 40 assists and five kills, and sophomore Siri Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) provided 11 kills and 12 digs.

Bentley will be back in action Tuesday night when it hosts Southern New Hampshire University at 7:30 pm.
