Coscia, Hadder Each Post 12 Kills as UMass-Lowell Sweeps Past Bentley, 3-0
LOWELL, Mass. -- Seniors Sarah Coscia (Pittsfield) and Jillian Hadder (Yucaipa, Calif.) each had 12 kills and a hitting percentage over .300 as UMass-Lowell started fast and went on to a three-set sweep of Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference women's volleyball Wednesday night at Costello Gym.
The River Hawks (5-4, 1-0 NE-10) dominated the first and last sets, winning each 25-15, and squeezed out a 27-25 victory in the pivotal second set.
Bentley (5-6, 2-1) had a tough time getting started as it watched UMass-Lowell amass nine of the match's first ten points. Seven of those came on River Hawk kills, including three by junior Lea Freeman (Methuen), and another was courtesy of an ace served by senior Vicky Wong (Tewksbury).
The Falcons battled back from a 25-21 deficit in the middle set, but a Wong ace and block assists from Freeman and junior Trina Carroll (Hampton, N.H.) gave Lowell the 2-0 lead in the match.
Senior Alaura Berry (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) led Bentley with seven kills and a .375 hitting percentage. Classmate Kelly Mee (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North HS) provided 24 assists, nine digs and three blocks for the Falcons.
Bentley will look to get back on the winning track Friday night at St. Michael's.
