Berry, Mee Help Bentley Post Five-Set Victory over Assumption in NE-10 Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior Alaura Berry (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo HS) had four of her dozen kills in the fifth set and classmate Kelly Mee (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North HS) amassed 46 assists, eight kills, seven digs and four aces as Bentley University outlasted Assumption College, 3-2, in Northeast-10 Conference women 's volleyball Tuesday night at Laska Gym.

Bentley (1-2, 1-0 NE-10) took the first two sets in convincing fashion, 25-17 and 25-15. However, the Greyhounds (5-3, 0-1 NE-10) battled back with 25-22 and 25-23 victories in the next two to force the decisive final set.

That one didn't start out well for the Falcons as Assumption jumped out to a 4-0 lead. With their team down 5-2, Berry (three kills) and Mee (seven assists) sparked an 8-2 Bentley spurt that put the visitors in front for good, 10-7.  Following a Greyhound timeout and a service error, the Falcons tallied five of the matches' final six points, the clincher coming on an ace by junior Virginia Wong (Quincy/North Quincy HS).

Berry's four kills in the fifth set came in as many attempts, and she finished the match with a .579 hitting percentage, five digs and three blocks.

She was one of four Falcons to register double-digits in the kill category. Freshman Ashley Ahearn (Marshfield/Marshfield HS) topped the list with 13, and seniors Morgan O'Laughlin (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) and Andrea Farah (Miami, Fla./Palmer Trinity HS) each had a dozen. Farah also contributed with 16 digs and five aces, and O'Laughlin hit a solid .370.

On defense, senior Maitlyn Kraft (New Braunfels, Texas/St. Mary's Hall) made 20 digs, and both Wong and freshman Kristina Wilson (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River HS) had 12.

Freshmen Mary Johnston (Pearland, Texas) and Lauren Ostafin (Avon, Conn.) led Assumption with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

The Falcons launch their home schedule this weekend when they host the annual Bentley Invitational Friday and Saturday.
