Varsell & Batzinger Set School Records during UMass-Boston Indoor Open

BOSTON, Mass. – Bentley University graduate student Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) added the 3,000-meter indoor record to her collection while provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track Championships during the season-opening UMass-Boston Indoor Open Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Varsell, who already owned the standards in the 400, 500 and 800, captured the 3,000 in 9:54.92 with a winning margin of more than 40 seconds. That struck the 10:00.8 from the record book, a mark achieved by Teresa Kittredge way back in 1986.

The other record that was set Saturday came in the weight throw with senior Aubrey Batzinger (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) improving on her own record. She registered a distance of 31 feet, 6.75 inches to better the standard she set at last year's Northeast-10 Championships by nearly five-and-a-half feet.

Senior Ashley Nichols (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) took third in the 5,000 meters (18:27.21) and sophomore Dusty Sacco (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes HS) finished sixth in the 1000 (3:21.39).

Bentley also received a fourth in the 4x400 relay with juniors Vanessa Wegner (Westborough/ Westborough HS) and Alix Pettinella (Wingdale, N.Y./Arlington HS) combining with seniors Taryn Kershaw (Revere/Revere HS) and Delia Equitz (Sussex, Wisc./Arrowhead Union) for a time of 4:17.83.

This was the team's only meet during the 2013 portion of the schedule. The next meet will be Jan. 19 with the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard.
