Academic Excellence for Bentley Men's and Women's Track

WALTHAM, Mass. – Three members of the 2012-13 Bentley University track and field teams have been accorded All-Academic status by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). They are rising senior Eric Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS) and recent graduates Caitlin Fahey (Bridgewater/Coyle-Cassidy HS) and Amy Varsell (Burlington, Comn/Lewis S. Mills HS).

In addition, both the Bentley men's and women's team received All-Academic Team recognition from the USTFCCCA after both teams posted a 3.33 cumulative GPA. The Falcons were one of only two Northeast-10 Conference teams to have both the men and women honored, and the men's GPA ranked third highest nationally in Division II.

Varsell and Fahey were previously chosen for Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America honors with Varsell a first-team selection and Fahey a third-teamer. They were also members of the Academic All-Northeast-10 outdoor track team.

Fahey, who finished her career in May at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, received All-Academic honors for the sixth time. As a senior, she was a three-time Northeast-10 champion (800 and 1500 outdoors, 1000 indoors), and she finished her career as Bentley's school record holder in both the indoor mile and outdoor 1500.

Varsell, a two-time Academic All-America, has a distinguished resume that includes four USTFCCCA All-Academic awards. She earned her fifth career Division II All-America award in May with a seventh-place finish in the 1500 meters at the NCAA Division II Championships. Varsell will continue her college career this coming year as a graduate student, with eligibility remaining for cross country and indoors.

Kennedy's junior year included a fourth-place finish jn the 60 meters at the Northeast-10 indoor championships and a tenth-place finish in the 200 at the indoor New Englands. Outdoors, he was 12th in the 200 at the New Englands. He owns the indoor school records in both the 200 and 300.

Fahey and Varsell both majored in corporate finance and accounting, and Kennedy's major is management.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have reached a provisional or automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in either indoor or outdoor seasons.
