Fahey Provisionally Qualifies for NCAAs in 1500

RALEIGH, N.C. – Bentley University senior Caitlin Fahey (Bridgewater, Mass./Coyle-Cassidy HS) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Championships in the 1500 meters with an impressive performance during the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University's Paul Herr Track Friday night.

Fahey, coming off an outstanding indoor season, ran the 1500 in 4:31.12, the second best posted by a Division II athlete thus far this spring, second on Bentley's all-time list and just 0.95 seconds off the school record set by teammate Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) a year ago. It bettered her existing personal record by more than 17 seconds.

Competing primarily against Division I athletes, Fahey was 12th of 16 in her section and finished 29th of 201 runners overall. Of the runners to post a better time, 20 were from Big East, Big Ten, ACC or SEC institutions and seven were unattached or with running clubs.

Varsell, in her second race back after injuries kept her out of indoors and cross country, posted a time of 4:40.73, third best among Division II runners, 13th of 23 in her section and 74th overall.

The highlight for the men's team was a New England qualifying performance by junior Eric Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS) in the 100 meters. He finished in exactly 11.00 seconds, placing fifth of eight in his heat, tenth among Division II competitors and 38th of 109 overall.

Freshman Edy-Elliot Uthman-Olukokun (West Warwick, R.I./West Warwick HS) made his outdoor debut as a collegian and ran the 100 in 11.30 seconds, placing 74th overall.

In the 5,000 meters, senior John Drago (Avon, Conn./Avon HS) posted a time of 15:15.41, 13th best among Division II athletes. He was 13th of 26 in his section and 89th of 154 overall.

Junior Conor Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) had a strong effort in the 1,500 meters, posting a 4:04.67 to rank eighth among Division II athletes and 75th of 137 overall. Senior Craig Robinson (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough HS) also ran the 1,500, winning his section in 4:08.23. Overall, he was 98th.

The massive meet, which includes athletes from 87 different colleges and universities as well as many prominent club and professional teams, will continue on Saturday.
