Varsell Repeats as Northeast-10 800 Meter Champion
BOSTON, Mass. – Bentley University junior All-America Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) successfully defended her 800 meter championship Saturday night at the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Varsell, who won the 800 both indoors and out as a sophomore, broke the tape in 2:13.09, improving on the meet record she set a year ago by 2.26 seconds. She won rather easily, finishing 2.39 seconds before runner-up Sarah Wilson of Stonehill.
The next highest finish for a Bentley runner was recorded by sophomore Ashley Nichols (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS). She bettered her former personal best in the 5,000 meters by about 27 seconds to place third in 19:25.49.
Also scoring for the Falcons were sophomore Brittany Pandolph (Tewksbury/Tewksbury HS) in the shot put and senior Evelyn Marrero (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam HS) in the 3,000. Pandolph's threw of 38 feet, 9.5 inches was the best of her career, and good for sixth place, and Marrero was seventh in 10:56.71.
Junior Caitlin Fahey (Bridgewater/Coyle-Cassidy HS) took eighth in the mile, with a time of 5:14.47.
In the team standings, Bentley was eighth of nine with 28 points. The team championship went to UMass-Lowell with 158 points, 28 more than runner-up Stonehill College.
