Varsell Provisionally Qualifies for NCAAs in 800 Meters

BOSTON, Mass. – Bentley University junior All-America Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track Championships with a strong showing in the 800 meters Friday night during the Boston University Terrier Invitational at the BU Track and Tennis Center.

Varsell, who finished fourth in the event at last year's nationals, won her heat in 2:14.25, the time the third best recorded by a Division II woman thus far this season. She was 12th of 82 overall, trailing six Division I athletes, one junior college runner and four club performers.

Varsell's night also included running a 60.7 leg in the 4x400 relay.

In the 200 meters, senior Natalie Caldwell (Greenbrae, Calif./Redwood HS) set a personal best of 27.57 seconds while winning her heat.  Overall, she was 89th in a field of 149.

Sophomores Ashley Nichols (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) and Brittany Pandolph (Tewksbury/Tewksbury HS) also had solid performances. Nichols came within five seconds of her PR and was 54th of 83 in the 3,000 meters, posting a time of 10:35.34. Pandolph threw the shot 35 feet, six inches to place 29th out of 52 participants, and seventh amongst non-Division I athletes.

The next action for the Bentley women is the Dartmouth Indoor Classic next Saturday.
