Varsell’s Season to Continue at NCAA Div. II Championships

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) will represent Bentley University at the 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held in Turlock, Calif. May 26-28.

Varsell made the cut in the 800 meters, an event in which she finished fourth at the NCAA Division II indoor championships back in March.  Seventeen were accepted to run in the 800, and Varsell had the 16th best qualifying time at 2:11.98.

The preliminaries for the 800 will take place on Friday, May 27 at 6:30 pm PDT, with the finals set for 7:25 pm PDT on Saturday, May 28.

It's been quite a year for Varsell, who has earned All-America honors indoors and All-New England accolades both indoors and out.  She's broken a school record ten times, including the outdoor 800 standard all five times she's run it this year, and has captured both the indoor and outdoor Northeast-10 Conference championships in the 800.

Varsell has lowered the outdoor record in the 800 a total of 4.26 seconds over the course of the season, with times of 2:14.99 at the Raleigh Relays March 26, 2:13.09 at the Princeton-hosted Larry Ellis Invitational April 22, 2:12.68 at the Stonehill Invitational April 29, 2:12.62 at the Northeast-10 Championships May 7 and 2:11.98 at the New Englands on Saturday.  Indoors, her best 800 was achieved at the New Englands when she posted a 2:11.73.

Varsell will be Bentley's first participant at the outdoor NCAA Division II Women's Track and Field Championships since Melissa Nash in 2008.
