School-Record Performance Propels Varsell to 7th in New England 800

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Bentley University sophomore Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) finished seventh in the 800 meters at the New England Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday afternoon after breaking a school record for the tenth time in the last 15 weeks.

It was the fifth time this spring that Varsell has run the 800, and she's improved on the existing school record on each occasion. Saturday's 2:11.98 bettered her time from last week's Northeast-10 Conference Championships by 0.64 seconds and marked the fourth time in as many weeks she's set the 800 record.

Varsell climbed from 25th to 15th on the NCAA Division II performance list and will now have to wait to see how many are accepted to participate in the event at the upcoming 2011 NCAA Division II Championships.

Varsell was also part of Bentley's 4x400 meter relay team, which placed 12th and recorded the second-best time in school history, 4:02.81. That quartet also included junior Natalie Caldwell (Greenbrae, Calif./Redwood HS) and freshmen Christine Smith (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS) and Diana Thompson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull HS).

Junior Keisha Johnson (Randolph, Mass./Randolph HS) was 16th in the triple jump (35 feet, 5.75 inches) and freshman Brittany Pandolph (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury HS) was 22nd in the shot put (34 feet, 10.25 inches).

On the men's side, junior Dan Fava (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) was 26th in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:57.13.
