School Record for Varsell at Stonehill Invitational

EASTON, Mass. -- Bentley University sophomore Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) continued her assault on the school record book and freshman Brittany Pandolph (Tewksbury/ Tewksbury HS) came close to breaking a 19-year old school record in the shot put during Friday night's Stonehill Invitational.

A week after breaking her own school record in the 800 meters and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships in a meet at Princeton, Varsell improved on that mark by 0.41 seconds with a winning effort of 2:12.68.

In addition to finishing first among 24 runners, Varsell climbed one notch to 16th on this year's NCAA Division II outdoor performance list in the 800.  It marked the eighth time in 13 weeks that she has broken a Bentley record.

Pandolph finished fourth, in a field of 15, in the shot put with her throw of 39 feet, 9.75 inches a personal best and just two-and-a-half inches shy of the school record that Tammy Lavallee has held since the 1992 season.

Pandolph's night also included a fifth place finish in the javelin, with a distance of 112 feet, six inches.

Team season-bests were set in four other events during the meet. Included was a time of 4:03.94 in the 4x400, which placed second of five and was good for fourth on Bentley's all-time list. That quartet consisted Varsell, classmate Caitlin Fahey (Bridgewater/Coyle-Cassidy HS), sophomore Andrea Crowley (Bourne/Bourne HS) and freshman Christine Smith (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS).

Junior Keisha Johnson (Randolph/Randolph HS) had her best efforts of the season in both the long jump (16 feet, 7 inches) and the triple jump (35 feet, 9.25 inches). She was third of seven in the former and her triple jump performance placed her fourth of ten.

Crowley's 200 time of 27.80 seconds established a new PR and was good for ninth out of 20 runners in the event.

In the discus, freshman Aubrey Batzinger (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) finished eighth with a throw of 101 feet, five inches.

In the team standings, Bentley was seventh of ten with 43 points. Four of the six teams in front of the Falcons were Division I programs, including team champion Rhode Island (212 points).

A portion of the Bentley team will compete in the Brown Springtime Invitational on Sunday.
