Varsell Named NE-10 Women’s Track Athlete of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Bentley University sophomore Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) has been named the Women's Track Athlete of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference following her outstanding performance Friday night in the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University.

Varsell broke her own school outdoor record in the 800 meters, with her time of 2:13.09 bettering the mark she set last month at the Raleigh Relays by 1.9 seconds. It was good for 17th on the current NCAA Division II performance list, and marked the seventh time in her last 12 non-relay races that the All-America has broken the existing school record.

Varsell, who finished fourth in the 1500 at the NCAA Indoor Championships to become the first All-America in the program's history, began her onslaught on the record book with by running the 500 in 1:17.76 at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games.

She captured the 800 at the Northeast-10 Championships in a school record 2:15.35 on Feb. 15, and twice bettered that about a week-and-a-half later at the New Englands, with times of 2:14.24 in the trials and 2:11.73 in the finals.

Varsell's outdoor season began with a pair of school records in the prestigious Raleigh Relays, 57.83 seconds in the 400 and 2:14.99 in the 800.

Currently, on the All-East Region performance lists, Varsell ranks second in the 800 and 1500, and third in the 400.

This weekend, Bentley is scheduled to compete in the Stonehill Invitational Friday night and the Brown Invitational Sunday.
