Varsell Breaks 800 Meter Record for 2nd Time in 9 Days

BOSTON, Mass. -- Eight days after breaking a 17-year-old school record in the 800 meters, Bentley University sophomore Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) did it again Friday night during the New England Championships at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.

Varsell qualified for Saturday afternoon's finals in the 800 with a time of 2:14.24, bettering the standard of 2:15.35 that she set at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships by more than a full second. She was second in her heat and one of ten to advance out of a field of 29.

Varsell's performance elevated her 15 places on the NCAA Division II performance list, from 28th to 13th.

Senior Steve Gendron (Lowell/Lowell HS) set a personal best in the 5000 meters by nearly six seconds, with his time of 15:17.75 placing him 23rd out of 34  participants, including fourth among Division II runners.

Sophomore Bryan Carton (Norwell/Norwell HS) was third among Division II runners in the 500 meters, with his time of 1:07.15 good for 23rd of 29 overall.
