Varsell, Marrero Record Victories at GBTC Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Amy Varsell (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills HS) and junior Evelyn Marrero (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam HS) registered victories Sunday while competing for the Bentley University women's indoor track and field team in the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard University's Gordon Track and Tennis Center. The meet was the first for the Falcons under the direction of new head coach Kevin Curtin.

Varsell outran 37 other competitors in the 800 meters with her time of 2:22.17 a personal best by 3.20 seconds. Marrero's winning performance came in a field of 22 in the 3,000 meters, with her time 10:48.20 besting Katie Famous of the Greater Boston Track Club by the slimmest of margins, a hundredth of a second.

Sophomore Caitlin Fahey (Bridgewater/Coyle-Cassidy HS) represented Bentley in the 800 invitational. She was 10th of 10 in that race, behind seven club athletes and two collegians, but her time of 2:23.04 would have been good for third in the regular 800.

Freshman Brittany Pandolph (Tewksbury/Tewksbury HS) and senior Kasey Kearney (Syracuse, N.Y./CBA) were seventh and 13th, respectively, in the shot put with Pandolph uncorking a throw of 34 feet, 10 inches. Kearney's top throw was 30 feet, 5.25 inches.

In the mile, freshman Ashley Nichols (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) won her heat and placed 18th of 59 overall with a time of 5:31.13.

This coming weekend, Bentley will participate in the Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center Friday and at the Boston University Terrier Classic on Saturday.
