5 Bentley Swimmers Earn Academic All-Northeast-10 Honors

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Five members of the Bentley University men's and women's swimming teams were recently selected for the 2010-11 Academic All-Northeast-10 Conference team.

They are seniors Matt Cesaro (Avon, Conn./Avon HS), Erik Stricker (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central HS) and Emily Travers (Brentwood, N.H./Exeter HS), junior Joe Frantel (Canandaigua, N.Y./Marcus Whitman HS) and sophomore Abby Mathews (Chelmsford/Chelmsford HS).

Travers was recognized for the third time and Cesaro, Frantel and Stricker each earned the honor for the second time. Bentley's five honorees was a conference-high total.

Travers, who qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in diving, owns the school record for 11 dives off the three-meter board, 449.10. A marketing major and a team co-captain, she finished third in both diving events at the NE-10 Championships and was third in the one-meter at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championships.

Cesaro, a corporate finance and accounting major, finished 12th in both the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 free at the Northeast-10 Championships, and was also 13th in the 100 breaststroke. His best finish at the NEISDA Championships was a fourth in the 100 individual medley with a time of 57.06 seconds. Cesaro, a team co-captain, was previously an All-Academic selection in 2009.

Stricker, also a CFA major, owns a share of the school record in the 800 free relay (7:11.76), which was set at the 2010 NEISDA Championships. Top performances this season for the distance swimmer included a sixth in the 1000 free at the NE-10 Championships, a fourth in the same event at the NEISDA Championships, and a seventh in the NEISDA 500.

Frantel, whose name is next to a pair of Bentley relay records (400 free, 400 medley), is a marketing major. He had three top ten finishes at the NEISDA Championships, a list highlighted by a seventh in the 200 freestyle (1:48.91), and was 12th in both the 50 free (23:01) and 200 free (1:40.75) at the conference championships.

Mathews, an outstanding student majoring in corporate finance and accounting, also qualified as a diver for the NCAA Division II Championships. She was fourth in both diving events at the NE-10 Championships and finished second in the three-meter and fourth in the one-meter at the NEISDA meet.
