Goals by Gleason and Vachon Lift Bentley Past No. 23 Saint Anslem 3-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bridget Gleason scored two goals and Gabby Vachon scored once as Bentley defeated No. 23 ranked Saint Anselm 3-1 on Tuesday.

Gleason scored in the 9th minute to give the Falcons an early lead, and Vachon doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute.

Gleason added her second of the day in the 60th minute for a 3-0 Bentley lead.

Saint Anselm's Livi Varetimos added a goal in the 77th minute to pull them to within 3-1 but that was as close as they could get.

Falcons goalie Claire Ewen, the two-time reigning NE10 Goalkeeper of the Week, made 10 saves. That's her second straight game with double digit saves.

Gleason has now scored two goals in two out of the last three games.

The opening goal came as Gleason hustled to press a Saint Anselm defender who was attempting a clear near the Hawks' goal. Gleason blocked the clearing attempt and propelled the ball in for a 1-0 lead.

The second goal came off a steal in midfield by Scarlett D'Amico who passed ahead to Vachon. Vachon dribbled past a Hawks defender and fired off a low shot from 18 yards that beat Saint Anselm's keeper to the far post.

Leading 2-0 in the second half, Jenna Hendriksen and Sydney O'Connor combined with Gleason to make it 3-0. A pass from Hendriksen to O'Connor in midfield led to a beautifully lofted ball by O'Connor over the top of Saint Anselm's defense. Gleason took one touch at the edge of the 18-yard box and chipped a shot over the Hawks' keeper for the goal.

Despite Varetimos' late goal, Bentley had no trouble closing out the game.

The win improved the team's record to 4-2-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the NE10. Their next match is on Saturday against Franklin Pierce at home.
