Bentley Defeats Pace 2-1 for Three Points

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley earned a 2-1 victory over visiting Pace on Wednesday afternoon for three crucial points in the Northeast-10 standings. Amanda Andriano (Fort Salonga, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Brooke Jones (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) scored the goals and goalkeeper Claire Ewen (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) made several big saves.

Bentley took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on Andriano's first goal of the season in the 20th minute.

McKenzie Sullivan (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) stared with the ball on the left, just outside of the penalty area and she fed a pass to Gabby Vachon (Pocasset, Mass./Austin Prep) in the middle of the field. Vachon then found Andriano on the right, about 22 yards from goal. Andriano got off a low shot that beat the Pace keeper to the far post for a 1-0 Bentley lead.

Pace though equalized in the 26th minute on a goal by Allison Carr. Ava Viebrock sent a cross in from about 30 yards, into the six yard box that Carr got to first and headed into the top of the net to tie the match 1-1.

The Falcons though took the lead back in the 64th minute on Jones' 3rd goal of the year, on a penalty kick. Bentley had possession near the penalty area and Sullivan first fired a shot that was blocked. The ball pinballed around and found its way back to Sullivan, who had another crack from about 15 yards that hit the hand of a Pace defender for a hand ball call and a penalty kick.

Jones was selected to take the kick and she scored with a low shot to the right-hand corner to give Bentley a 2-1 lead.

The Bentley defense then came up with several big stops to preserve the lead. Ewen tipped a shot by Carr over the crossbar in the 77th minute and just a minute later Vachon made a key block on a shot by Viebrock from close range.

In the 86th minute Ewen made one final big stop, as she denied Viebrock on the near post from close range.

The Falcons improved to 5-5-3 overall and 3-4-1 NE10 with the victory. Their next match is on Saturday at Le Moyne.
