Bentley Knocks Off No. 15 Ranked Mercy 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley women's soccer team defeated No. 15 ranked Mercy 2-1 on Monday afternoon in a non-conference match to snap the Mavericks' 10-match winning streak.

Senior Liliana Silva (North Grafton, Mass./Grafton) and sophomore Jillian Hendriksen (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) scored the goals for the Falcons. While Bentley goalkeepers, sophomore Claire Ewen (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and freshman Holly DiPalo (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) both came up with big saves throughout the afternoon.

Ewen made four saves in the first half and DiPalo stopped four shots in the second half.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on Silva's team leading fourth goal of the season.

Jenna Hendriksen (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) and Amanda Andriano (Fort Salonga, N.Y./St. Anthony's) both played headers forward to advance the ball to the edge of the penalty box. After Andriano's header, the ball bounced free and was teed up for Silva, who fired a shot from 22 yards out that went into the upper right corner and past the outstretched arms of the Mercy goalkeeper.

Bentley then doubled its advantage on Hendriksen's goal, off a corner kick. Bentley won a corner kick and it was taken on the right side by senior Brooke Jones (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), who sent the kick to the far post. Three Bentley players ran up to attack it, but it was Hendriksen, a center back, who got there for a thunderous header inside the six-yard box and into the top of the net.

The Falcons led 2-0 at halftime as Ewen's four saves helped keep the Mavericks off the scoreboard.

Mercy cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal by Ancksu Dixon in the 59th minute. But DiPalo made several crucial saves over the remaining 30 minutes to keep Bentley in front and help them secure the win.

Bentley improved its record to 4-5-3 on the season and Mercy dropped to 10-2.

Bentley's next match is set for Wednesday at 3:30 pm when they host Pace in a return to NE10 action.
