Early Goal Enough to Lift Saint Anselm Past Bentley 1-0 in NE10 Quarters

WALTHAM, Mass. – A 6th minute goal by sophomore Olivia Gotobed was enough to lift No. 6 seed Saint Anselm past No. 3 seed Bentley University 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Women's Soccer Championship.

This was the second meeting in five days between these two teams, after Bentley won the first meeting on Wednesday 2-1 in the regular season finale.

Gotobed scored from about 15 yards away, from the left corner of the penalty area, with a shot that was tucked into the upper left-hand corner of the net. The play began with a throw-in for Saint Anselm in its offensive half and a quick touch by sophomore Lily LaGrassa over to Gotobed.

Bentley nearly equalized just seconds later though. A shot by senior midfielder Rebecca Nguyen (Dudley, Mass./Shepherd Hill) from about 25 yards away had Saint Anselm keeper Kate Macaluso beat, only for the ball to bang off the crossbar.

Freshman Sydney O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) had an effort from the edge of the penalty area saved by Macaluso in the 25th minute.

Gotobed had a shot that hit the crossbar just over a minute later, and Falcons keeper Kat Hassapis (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) denied a shot by Gotobed from 18 yards away in the 29th minute.

Bentley ended the first half with a 9-7 edge in total shots and Hassapis made three saves in the opening 45 minutes.

The Falcons had a scoring chance early in the second half in the 49th minute. A shot by senior Emily McGrath (Brewster, Mass./Nauset) appeared goal bound, only for a Saint Anselm player to clear it off the line at the last second before it was a goal.

In the 78th minute freshman center back Jillian Hendriksen (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) used a highlight reel spin move to shake away from the Saint Anselm defense and get off a shot from about 22 yards, only for Macaluso to come up with the save.

The Hawks, ranked 4th in the East Region this week, were then able to see out the remaining 12-plus minutes to secure the win and advance to the semifinals, where they will meet the No. 2 seed Saint Rose.

Bentley, ranked 7th in the East Region this week, saw its record fall to 8-6-3.
