Bentley Defeats Franklin Pierce Behind Stout Defense, Jones’ Goal

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley women's soccer team kept its fifth clean sheet out of six NE10 matches so far, and junior Brooke Jones (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) provided the goal as the Falcons defeated Franklin Pierce 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons limited the Ravens to just three shots on goal in the win, which improved their record to 4-1-1 in NE10 matches and 4-2-3 overall.

Franklin Pierce came into the game ranked 4th in the East Region, and Bentley was ranked 6th in the region.

Jones scored on a penalty kick in the 71st minute to give the Falcons the lead. The penalty came after a nice through ball by senior Rebecca Nguyen (Dudley, Mass./Shepherd Hill) in midfield released Sydney O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) down the left-hand side. O'Connor ran on to the ball in the 18-yard box and was pushed over by a Franklin Pierce defender to win the penalty.

Jones was chosen to take the kick, and her shot into the low right-hand corner was too much for FPU keeper Emilie Fox to stop.

Bentley then used some strong defending in the final seconds to preserve the win.

With 18 seconds left, FPU's Anna Crapanzano had a shot blocked from about 12 yards out by a Bentley defender. Her teammate Anna Bayet chased the ball down and attempted to send in a cross, but two Bentley defenders blocked it, and time expired.

With the win in the books, Bentley will next be in action on Tuesday when they host Stonehill at 3:30 PM.
