Waltham, Mass. – Senior Stephanie Helin (Coventry, Conn./East Catholic) scored the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute and senior Kelly Donlon (Meriden, Conn./Francis Maloney) added a late goal to see Bentley past New Haven 3-1 on Wednesday in the team's NE10 Conference opener.
With the score tied 1-1 in the second half, Bentley got the go-ahead goal from Helin in the 78th minute, with sophomore Dana Goulet (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) on the assist. A through ball in midfield by Goulet released Helin ahead of the New Haven defense, and a finish from close range by Helin after she maneuvered around the goalie gave Bentley the lead at 2-1.
In the final seconds, a header by sophomore Rebecca Nguyen (Dudley, Mass./Shepherd Hill) off a corner kick went off the crossbar, and Donlon was there to score from close range to give Bentley its final margin of victory at 3-1.
It was all Bentley in the first half as they controlled possession and outshot the Chargers 8-2 in shots on goal. A 33rd minute goal by Goulet gave them a 1-0 lead, and the lead could have been more at halftime if not for a couple of shots that hit the post or were tipped over the cross bar by New Haven keeper Paige Davis.
New Haven knotted the game at 1-1 in the 59th minute. Just moments earlier, a penalty kick of New Haven's Mackenzie Myers went off the post. On the same possession the Chargers were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box, and midfielder Sorcha Bhraonain converted from about 20 yards to tie the score.
The Falcons then saw off the final 11-plus minutes to secure the victory.
Bentley (2-1-1, 1-0 NE10) next heads out on the road on Saturday to visit Southern Conn State.
