WALTHAM, Mass. – Merrimack forward Andrea Rego scored the winning goal in the 89th minute and broke a scoreless tie as the visiting Warriors defeated Bentley 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 match.
The goal was started after Bentley pressured Merrimack's goal in search of the winner in the final minutes. However, the Merrimack defense avoided the danger and a long clearance was headed on by midfielder Heather Hastbacka. That header sprung Rego for a breakaway after she ran on to the ball just over the halfway line, allowing her to score from 12 yards out after finishing her run.
Bentley's Ana Tantum (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) nearly gave the hosts the lead in the 54th minute with a turn and spin shot off her marker after winning the ball, but Merrimack goalie Meghan Gulbrandsen got a piece of it.
Bentley's defense did a nice job of preventing the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute when Merrimack was awarded a free kick just outside the six-yard box, but the Falcons' wall blocked the shot of Cori Gillen.
Sophomore goalie Deirdre Macrorie (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) made four saves for the Falcons in the first half, and junior Paige Laliberte (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) came on for the second half.
