Pomponi, Hynds Lead Bentley Past Saint Michael’s

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Julie Pomponi (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) scored twice, just before and after halftime, and freshman goalie Christiana Hynds (West Roxbury, Mass./Boston Latin) made several key saves as the Bentley University women's soccer team defeated Saint Michael's 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 play.

Pomponi netted her second and third goals of the season in the 43rd and 46th minutes to help the Falcons to their second straight victory, both of which have been in NE-10 play.

Trailing 1-0 after Saint Michael's Katie Murphy scored in the 16th minute, Pomponi and sophomore Katie Moroney (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) connected to give Bentley the equalizer. Saint Michael's turned the ball over in its own end, allowing Moroney to send a through ball to Pomponi, who blasted a shot from 12 yards out for the goal.

After the halftime break Bentley wasted little time in taking the lead as Pomponi scored just 39 seconds in. Sophomore Chelsea Owens (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) had a big hand in the goal, taking a shot from the right corner of the box that trickled past goalie Brittany Cocozza, and Pomponi was there to knock it in to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.

While Bentley controlled play for the most part to that point, Saint Michael's ramped up the pressure for a 10-minute period starting in the 58th minute, requiring Hynds to make a number of quality saves. She denied Kristin Hagenbarth, Laura Ostrout and Olivia Biron.

The Bentley defense blocked another open shot by Hagenbarth, and Biron had maybe the best chance of all in the 69th minute, firing a shot from 20 yards that just went over the bar.

Saint Michael's had one final chance to score in the waning seconds with the ball loose on the goal line, but they were called for offsides and Bentley hung on for the win.

The Falcons improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the NE-10 and Saint Michael's falls to 1-3 and 0-2.

Bentley is back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., to take on Mercy College in a non-conference match.
