Big 4th Quarter Sees Bentley Advance Past Assumption 16-12

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley outscored Assumption 6-1 in the 4th quarter to defeat the Greyhounds 16-12 in the quarterfinals of the Northeast 10 Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons trailed 11-10 entering the final quarter but finished strong to advance to the semifinals on Wednesday, where they will meet top seeded Pace.

The run started when Caroline Affolter scored 45 seconds into the 4th to tie the score 11-11.

Natalia Dutkewych then scored at 12:35 to give the Falcons a 12-11 lead.

Maeve Johnson followed by scoring a women-up goal at 8:11, the first of two in a row for her. She scored again at 5:52 as the lead expanded to 14-11.

Consecutive women-up goals by Dutkewych at 4:46 and Joelle Solecki at 3:04 gave Bentley an insurmountable 16-11 lead.

While the lead was being built up, the Falcons played locked down defense. Ashlee Wargo made four saves in the 4th quarter and the Greyhounds mustered just five shots in the final 15 minutes.

Wargo finished the game with seven saves to earn her fifth win of the season.

In addition to scoring twice in the fourth quarter, Dutkewych had a game high eight draw controls. Caroline Affolter snagged four to help give Bentley a 17-15 edge on the day.

Johnson tallied five goals and Affolter had four goals and one assist. Courtney Dermody notched two goals and one assist.

Bentley led 6-2 after the first quarter and 7-2 early in the 2nd quarter after a goal by Affolter. But the Greyhounds went on a 5-0 run to make it a 7-7 game at halftime.

The third quarter was back-and-forth with Bentley taking a 10-8 lead at one point, but Assumption responded with a 3-0 run to lead 11-10 going into the final quarter.
