No. 14 Bentley Suffers Last Second Defeat to Saint Leo, 16-15

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo's Jana Nuss scored with 28 seconds remaining to break a 15-15 tie and give the Lions a one goal victory over No. 14 ranked Bentley on Thursday night.

A close game the entire way saw seven ties and seven lead changes, with three in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons trailed 15-13 with under seven minutes to play but erased the deficit with two quick goals by Caroline Affolter and Maeve Johnson. Affolter scored on a free position with 6:23 left and Johnson found the back of the net at the 5:49 mark.

The teams traded possessions without scoring over the next several minutes until a green card on Bentley gave Saint Leo a man up opportunity with 1:21 remaining. Nuss delivered the goal with 28 seconds left and Saint Leo won the ensuing draw control to hold on.

Bentley led 12-9 with 4:55 left in the 3rd quarter after a free position goal by Natalia Dutkewych, but the Lions closed the quarter on a 3-0 run to send the game to the 4th quarter tied 12-12.

Affolter scored for the Falcons 40 seconds into the final quarter for a 13-12 lead, before Saint Leo netted three straight over the next three minutes to take a 15-13 lead with 11:15 remaining.

Affolter led the Falcons with five points on four goals and one assist.

Amber Kiricoples and Dutkewych had two goals apiece.

Bentley will next face Florida Southern on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
