Affolter’s Goal Gives No. 21 Bentley 13-12 Overtime Win over No. 18 Saint Leo

ST. LEO, Fla. - Junior Caroline Affolter (Newburyport, Mass./Central Catholic) scored 1:45 into overtime to give No. 21 ranked Bentley a 13-12 victory over previously unbeaten No. 18 Saint Leo on Thursday night down in Florida.

Bentley controlled possession throughout overtime and on its second shot of the possession Affolter put the goal home to give them the win.

Affolter won the draw control at the start of overtime and Bentley worked the ball around looking for a shot until they called a timeout after 42 seconds.

Senior Kenzie Lupton (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) had a shot that was saved 31 seconds after the timeout but the ground ball was picked by Kathryn Slattery (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford). The ball then found its way to Affolter who worked her way close to the cage and buried a shot to give Bentley the win.

Bentley trailed 11-9 in the 4th quarter after Saint Leo's Jana Nuss scored on a free-position shot at the 10:44 mark.

But the Falcons then went on a 3-0 run over the next 10 minutes that gave them a 12-11 lead.

Maeve Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) scored 32 seconds after Nuss' goal to make it 11-10. Freshman Natalia Dutkewych (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield) then tied the game 11-11 with an unassisted goal at the 7:25 mark.

Sophomore Amanda Davis (Saunderstown, R.I./La Salle) gave Bentley the lead with a goal at 2:47. But St. Leo tied the game with 1:09 left in regulation with a woman-up goal by Ashlee Wilsynski.

Saint Leo won the ensuing draw control for the final possession of regulation but they didn't get a shot off.

Johnson led Bentley's attack with five goals, her third straight game with at least five goals.

Sophomore goalie Ashlee Wargo (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) made 10 saves to earn the win.

Bentley improved to 4-1 on the season. They will next play on Saturday against Florida Southern at 11:00 am.
