Bentley Closes Out Regular Season with 15-13 Victory over No. 21 New Haven

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley closed out the regular season with its second straight win over a ranked team after they defeated No. 21 New Haven 15-13 on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons finished the regular season with an 8-7 overall record and 7-6 in the Northeast-10. They will be the No. 7 seed in the NE10 Championship and will play the No. 2 seed Adelphi on Wednesday in the first round.

Bentley led nearly the entire game after taking the lead early in the 1st quarter. They led by as much as 14-7 in the 3rd quarter and withstood a later Chargers rally to secure the victory.

A goal by sophomore Steph McAuliffe (Natick, Mass./Natick) at 10:27 of the 3rd quarter gave the Falcons their biggest lead of the game at 14-7.

Neither team scored for more than seven minutes after that goal. But the Chargers closed the quarter with two goals to make it 14-9 going into the final 15 minutes.

Bentley's Maeve Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) scored the first goal of the 4th quarter at the 14:01 mark to give them a 15-9 lead.

There was another lengthy goal drought of about seven minutes as Bentley still led by six with under seven minutes remaining in the game.

New Haven gradually chipped away with four goals in a five-minute span. They got to within 15-13 after a goal by Reagan Bailey with 1:41 remaining.

After a Chargers timeout with 1:09 left, they turned the ball over on a clearing attempt and McAuliffe picked up the ground ball with 56 ticks remaining. Bentley was then able to run out the remaining clock to secure the victory.

Grad student Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) and Caroline Affolter (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) each had hat tricks for the Falcons. Affolter led the team with six draw controls.

Junior goalie Maya Rose (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) made eight saves to earn her eighth win of the season.
