No. 16 Bentley Upset by Saint Rose 16-15

ALBANY, N.Y. – Saint Rose won its third straight game with a 16-15 upset victory over the No. 16 ranked Bentley University women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights began their winning streak last Saturday with a 9-8 victory over then No. 18 ranked New Haven, and they defeated Saint Michael's 20-4 on Wednesday. They improved their records to 7-2 overall and 3-2 NE10, while the Falcons dropped to 4-3 overall and 3-2 NE10.

Bentley trailed 12-9 going into the 4th quarter after junior Sydney Lynch (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) scored with two seconds left in the third quarter to pull them to within three goals.

The Falcons then scored the first two goals of the 4th quarter, both coming from senior Glenna Gies (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), at the 14:06 and 12:45 marks, to make the score 12-11.

From that point the teams alternated goals the rest of the game. A player-up goal by Falcons sophomore attacker Maeve Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) at the 4:11 mark got them to within 15-14. Saint Rose though responded with a free-position goal from Kaitlyn Jolly at the 3:33 mark to restore its two-goal advantage at 16-14. That goal was Jolly's game-high fifth.

The teams then twice traded possessions back and forth until a save by Falcons goalie Maya Rose (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), a successful clear and a timeout with 34 seconds remaining led to Johnson scoring her fourth goal of the game with 25 ticks left on the clock to make it 16-15.

However, Saint Rose's Daria Bock was able to win the all-important ensuing draw control, and they were able to run out the remaining time to hold on for the victory.

Graduate student Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) had a team-high eight draw controls for the Falcons. Senior Christine Fish (Slinglerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) had one goal, four draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Bentley will look to bounce back on Tuesday night when they host Southern N.H. at 7:00 PM.
