No. 16 Bentley Uses Big Closing Run to Overcome Franklin Pierce 13-10

WALTHAM, Mass. – No. 16 ranked Bentley scored the final five goals of the game to overcome Franklin Pierce 13-10 on Wednesday night.

A back-and-forth contest saw the game tied seven different times and featured eight different lead changes.

The final lead change occurred when sophomore Maeve Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) scored with 6:04 remaining in the 4th quarter.

That was part of the closing 5-0 run for the Falcons that saw them put away a stubborn Franklin Pierce team.

The first goal of the run came when Johnson scored with eight seconds left in the 3rd quarter to get Bentley to within 10-9. Grad student Sandrine Heller (Weggis, Switzerland) had the assist on the goal.

The entire first half of the fourth quarter elapsed without a goal, but grad student midfielder Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) broke the scoreless run at exactly the halfway point with a goal with 7:30 remaining to tie the score 10-10.

Just over a minute later Johnson scored her third goal of the night to put Bentley in front, this time for good at 11-10.

McCarthy scored on a free-position shot with 3:56 remaining to give the Falcons a two goal cushion at 12-10.

With the game still in the balance and Franklin Pierce in possession, some good defensive work gave Bentley the ball back and a goal scored in transition by senior Glenna Gies (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) with 1:39 left sealed the win.

The goal was the third of the night for Gies, who joined Johnson and McCarthy with hat tricks on the night.

Senior Christine Fish (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) had a game-high eight draw controls. She added four ground balls, tied for the team-high with freshman Kat Slattery (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford).

The win improved Bentley's record to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in the NE10. They will be back in action on Saturday at Saint Rose.
