No. 14 Bentley Drops First Game of Season at No. 12 Mercy, 11-9

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – No. 14 ranked Bentley dropped a hard-fought contest at No. 12 ranked Mercy College on Saturday by an 11-9 score.

The Falcons battled back from an 8-4 deficit early in the 3rd quarter with a 5-1 run that spanned almost 20 minutes of game time.

A man-up goal by senior Glenna Gies (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) with 6:08 remaining in the 4th quarter capped the run and tied the score 9-9.

Five different players scored during the run, Steph McAuliffe (Natick, Mass./Natick), Courtney Dermody (Bedford, N.H./Bedford), Sandrine Heller (Weggis, Switzerland), Caroline Affolter (Newburyport, Mass./Central Catholic) and Gies.

The goal by Gies however was the last goal of the game Bentley scored.

Mercy's Juliana Keenan scored to give the Mavericks the lead with 4:28 remaining. Then after Mercy won the ensuing draw control, Keenan scored again just 34 seconds later to give them an 11-9 lead.

Bentley won the following draw control but couldn't create a scoring chance, and the teams traded possessions until time ran out.

Mercy led 3-1 after the first quarter, but Bentley battled back in the second quarter. Maeve Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), Gies and Affolter all scored as they cut the deficit to 6-4 at halftime.

Senior Christine Fish (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) had a game high five caused turnovers. She also scooped up four ground balls to tie for the team lead with Hannah Aronowitz (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna).

Bentley will look to get back in the win column when they next play on Tuesday at Assumption.
