Affolter’s Overtime Goal Sends Bentley to 10-9 Win over Assumption, and to Divisional Finals

Waltham, Mass. – Freshman Caroline Affolter (Newburyport, Mass./Central Catholic) scored with 1:36 left in the second overtime to give Bentley University a 10-9 victory over Assumption in the NE10 Northeast Division semifinals on Monday night.

With the win the Falcons advance on to the Division finals on Thursday night, where they will host Saint Anselm.

After the first three minute overtime ended with the game still tied 9-9, it went to a second, sudden-death overtime.

Senior Sandrine Heller (Weggis, Switzerland) won the draw control to give Bentley possession. After setting up the offense the ball ended up on the stick of Julia Glavin (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich), who drove to the cage and got off a shot that bounced in front of the net.

Affolter picked up the ground ball and beat Assumption goalie Allie Collins to the spot with a low shot for the goal to give Bentley the 10-9 win with 1:36 remaining on the clock.

The game was a tale of two halves. Bentley controlled the first half and led 6-2 at halftime behind three goals by Glavin and seven saves by graduate student goalie Eliza Bresler (Newton, Mass./Newton North).

Assumption though turned it around in the second half. They scored four straight goals and kept Bentley off the scoreboard for the first 17-plus minutes to claw back to tie the game 6-6.

Bentley though responded with two quick goals by junior Kayli Keenan (Pelham, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and Glavin to take the lead back at 8-6 at the 11:56 mark.

The Greyhounds scored three of the final four goals of regulation to force overtime. Bentley freshman Courtney Dermody (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) scored on a free-position shot with 3:09 remaining to give them a 9-8 lead. But Assumption's Jill Good scored her third goal of the game with 1:58 left to tie it again at 9-9.

Bentley had a final chance to win it in regulation, but a free-position shot by Dermody was saved by Collins with 13 seconds remaining to send the game to OT.

After the first three minutes of OT were scoreless, Affolter clinched it for Bentley with 1:36 left on the clock in the second OT.
